Big Skies Festival – Western Downs

2017-12-02T09:28:47+00:00 December 1st, 2017|

28th April  – 6th May 2018

A BRAND new seven-day event is set to delight the residents of the Western Downs and drive tourism next year as Big Skies dawns on the area.

Big Skies, approved by the Western Downs Regional Council, will raise the bar for destination-driven experience and anchor the regions tourism push.

The event will be bookended by the Dalby Picnic Races on Saturday, April 28, and the May Day long weekend, and will feature a line-up of ticketed and free events designed to showcase the region.

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Paul McVeigh said he was thrilled the area would be hosting an event of this size and calibre.

“We’ve already established a reputation for delivering fantastic signature events such as Opera at Jimbour, and I believe Big Skies will be an unforgettable series of events that will put our region on the map and really set a new precedent for the Western Downs,” Mayor McVeigh said.

“Whether you want to recline on a guided tour of the galaxy, enjoy a champagne breakfast as you watch hot air balloons fill the sky over the Jimbour Plains or relax with friends as you enjoy a rock concert in the impressive amphitheatre of Jimbour Station, this event has something for everyone.”

Camping and glamping options will be available at Jimbour Station for the duration of the stellar line-up of events, along with accommodation options from moteliers.

Signature events will include Big Night Sky – Guided tour of the Galaxy; rock music concert Day on the Plain; Big Skies Hot Air Balloon Spectacular and Food and Fibre, an event to showcase everything that has been locally sown and grown.

Exploring Jimbour House – Queensland Weekender

2017-11-02T10:20:53+00:00 November 2nd, 2017|

Jimbour House lies about 20 minutes north of Dalby.

Back in its glory days, its holding stretched over 120,000 hectares and was home to 200 people and over 300,000 sheep. Today the property is a much more modest 4,500 hectares. It’s still a working station, with about 2000 head of cattle.

The main attraction at Jimbour is its grand homestead and gardens.

The gardens are open every day and visitors can explore them on the ‘Living History Walk’. All that’s needed is a gold coin donation and a brochure which visitors can pick up at the entrance. The walk is self-guided and explores the fascinating history of the station and the families that called it home.

Watch Queensland Weekender every Saturday afternoon at 5.30pm on Channel 7 Queensland. The program is repeated nationally on 7Two the following Saturday at 12.30pm and is available for a limited time on catch-up TV at Plus7. Beautiful sounds fill Jimbour House

2017-03-27T09:09:29+00:00 March 27th, 2017|

ELEGANCE, harmonies and history were in the air on Sunday afternoon when contemporary musician Melissa Forbes performed at heritage-listed Jimbour House for a Regional Arts Council of Dalby concert.

Ms Forbes, who is a lecturer in contemporary music at the University of Southern Queensland, performed alongside her accompanist Alison Riethmuller and Dalby vocalist Jess Berwick, and even had her 10-year-old daughter Vivien Forbes perform on the viola.

She was pleased with how the event went, especially performing in the historic Jimbour House.

“Knowing that what we did was a bit different to what a lot of people were used to, it was really exciting when the different style was well-received,” Ms Forbes said.
