RUSSELL PASTORAL COMPANY CLOSES A DRY GULLY
5 January 2010

The Russell Pastoral Company announced today that it will suspend its involvement in the Australian Wine industry with its brand Jimbour Wines.

Speaking from the company’s historic site on the Jimbour Plains owner David Russell said “Due to the continuing poor financial outlook of the Australian wine industry, the company has elected to suspend our wine operations at this time. This decision is effective immediately, and we have no immediate plans to produce any further crop or wine”

The Russell Pastoral Company Board considered the short term viability of their wine business now under increasing pressure from the supermarket sector, and its consequential declining profitability within the current trading environment.

The company is mindful and in agreement with a recent industry statement “Structural surpluses of grapes and wine are now so large that they are causing long-term damage to the Australian wine industry-by devaluing the Australian brand, entrenching discounting and undermining profitability”

Jimbour’s 22 ha vineyard is to be mothballed for 4-5 years, and after that period of time a review of the climate for wine production re-assessed. In the ensuring period it will be converted to a dry grown operation with better resistance to drought and further climate change.

“The defining moment last year was the severe hail damage afflicted last November which led to 90 tonnes of lost premium grapes” adds David Russell

With the recent heavy rainfall over its western and central Queensland properties the company sees a better funds commitment toward cattle re-stocking now with the beef industry in growth mode.

Even though the Cellar Door at the property has closed immediately, the expansive gardens of heritage listed Jimbour House remains a popular tourist and event destination, and will remain accessible via a small donation for entry.
Jimbour’s city Cellar Door at Oliver & Co in West End will also continue to trade.

Jimbour Wines will trade out its bottled stock this year and offer bulk wines from the 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2009 seasons for sale.

Dec 09 - Queensland’s best performed Merlot

Jimbour’s Ludwig Leichhardt Reserve Merlot 2005 has picked up another heavy-weight award, with a Gold Medal at the Sydney International Wine Competition (SIWC) recently. This takes the wine to lofty heights, as its medal bag now consists of a Silver at the biggest wine show in Asia (Korea), a Silver in the Winestate Magazine’s Annual edition, this Gold medal in the SIWC and, some would say, its biggest accolade - winning critical acclaim by the Australian Sommeliers’ Association.

Needless to say this wine is running out! It is obviously drinking fantastically at the moment, so get it while you can and enjoy the best performed Merlot to ever come out of Queensland!

And please note, the 2006 vintage is also now available and has already rated 87 points in James Halliday’s 2010 Wine Companion. Click here for details, or phone 07 3236 2100.

Jimbour Comes to Brisbane. September 2009.

A new Satellite Cellar Door has opened in Brisbane featuring the full range of wines produced by Jimbour.

The Jimbour Cellar Door operates from Oliver & Co Pizzeria 104 Melbourne Street at West End and showcases a brand that is earning recognition for quality Queensland wine overseas and nationally.

Jimbour was recently awarded a Gold Medal for its 2007 Ludwig Leichhardt Reserve Shiraz at the San Francisco International Wine Show against competition from around the globe.

Judges ranked 4,300 entries from 21 countries including wineries from France, Spain, Italy, Germany, a wide range of other producers from Europe as well as entries from New Zealand and other Australian States.

Other Australian wineries to achieve Gold with Jimbour in the Shiraz category were Angove, Padthaway, Taylor’s and Wirra Wirra.

“It ranks Jimbour with the best Australia has to offer and paves the way for a wider expansion into the Brisbane market,” Jimbour Sales Manager Brian Madden, said. “Tasting a full range of our Queensland wines will add to the growing tourist appeal of the Southbank Precinct and be a fillip for local patrons as well."

Mr. Madden said the facility would enable patrons to enjoy cellar door style wine tasting and buy wine by the glass or bottle.

“It will provide an attractive partnership between premium Queensland wines and Oliver & Co Pizzeria who are providers of many gourmet products and a range of local delicacies."

Mr. Madden said the State Government and Southbank Corporation were to be congratulated for supporting the initiative and assisting the Queensland Wine Industry through the issue of these licences.

Jimbour's Ludwig Leichardt Shiraz 07 takes Gold at the The San Francisco International Wine Competition !

A Queensland winery has broken through international barriers to win gold at one of the world’s most prestigious wine judging events.

Jimbour Wines, based at historic Jimbour outside Dalby on Queensland’s Darling Downs, has been awarded a Gold Medal at the San Francisco International Wine Show against competitors from across the globe.

In results just announced, a Gold Medal went to Jimbour’s 2007 Ludwig Leichhardt Reserve Shiraz – named in honour of the famous explorer who departed from Jimbour in 1844 on his epic journey of discovery.

“This win is a great honour,” Jimbour spokesman, David Russell, said today.

“The award is fitting recognition of the dedication over many years by the Jimbour wine team, headed by Queensland Master of Wine Peter Scudamore-Smith.”

“It proves emphatically that a Queensland wine can match it with some of the best products the world and Australia has to offer,” Mr. Russell said.

“It is significant for the Queensland wine industry and Jimbour to achieve international recognition alongside such other established Australian wineries,” Mr. Russell said.

Mr. Russell said the Gold Medal wine was produced from Jimbour’s estate vineyard using a technique called summer pruning in which the entire crop is removed. The vine then grows again giving a lighter crop of lower temperature-ripened grapes, with subtle nuances of spice and blueberry.
