Jimbour recipes

When visiting Jimbour House we stumbled across a book tucked in the Billiards Room labeled Jimbour Recipe Book. Although the year is not stated, we expect that the book was created in the 1960’s. It features a range of recipes from the Russell family and nearby residents, who were influenced by Mrs Marion Alexander to share their cooking secrets.

The Book also holds a variety of advertisements from local businesses as well as reference to sponsors.

All the proceeds of the book went to Jimbour Hall Committee for the maintenance of the hall which was then in need of repair.

We asked David Russell to make selections of his favourite recipes.

Dried fruit Salad by Mrs C.W Russell.
Casserole Pears by Mrs C.W Russell.
Rich Christmas Plum Pudding by Mrs W.A Russell

At the time this book was published, the Rich Christmas Plum Pudding was made every year at Jimbour House. Mrs W.A Russell came to Jimbour House in 1924 and with her husband, presided over its restoration, with a grand re-opening in November 1925. She left for Sydney during World War 2 and thereafter paid many visits to Jimbour in her lifetime.

“An effort has been made to pay tribute to some of the founding residents of Jimbour and to acknowledge the contribution that old, timeless recipes still play in the country kitchen.”
